Matteo A. Vaiente

I am a PhD candidate in Biomedical Informatics at Arizona State University. My research focuses substantively on emerging infectious diseases, with a particular interest in zoonotic and vector-borne RNA viruses. I ask questions aimed at increasing our understanding of the evolutionary and population dynamics of RNA viral pathogens and elucidating factors that drive the spread of these pathogens in human and animal populations. The ultimate goal of this work is to derive actionable public health information to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases. Toward this aim, I take an interdisciplinary approach: integrating techniques from phylogenetics, mathematical modeling, statistics, machine learning and diagnostic microbiology.
